Outnumbered is a semi-improvised BBC1 sitcom based around a couple and their three young children living in London. Pete and Sue, the parents, are 'outnumbered' by their three children - curently aged eleven, thirteen and nineteen. The comedy follows the daily chaos of their life as they are locked in an un-equal contest with their three kids.

Plot[]

Outnumbered is about the Brockman family of South London, whose two parents are "outnumbered" by their three somewhat unruly children. The father, Pete (Hugh Dennis), is a history teacher at an inner city school, and the mother, Sue (Claire Skinner), is a part-time PA. The three children are fifteen-year-old Jake (Tyger Drew-Honey), eleven-year-old Ben (Daniel Roche) and nine-year-old Karen (Ramona Marquez). Other characters who regularly appear include Sue's new age 44-year-old sister, Angela Morisson (Samantha Bond), and their father and Granddad to the children, Frank (David Ryall).

Outnumbered explores the everyday problems of fibbing, that scary first day at secondary school and nits. Dad works in an inner city school, where a typical school holiday sees five arrested, two become pregnant and one pupil shot. Mum, meanwhile, is a part-time PA with a very demanding boss.

Other topics explored include racism, child abuse, new-age weirdness, weak bladders, death and heaven, bird flu, contagious diseases, bullying, obesity, parental competition, romantic nights in, divorce, journalism, running away, atoms, underage drinking, gin, corn-fed organic chickens, Nazis and ratbags!

Production[]

The comedy is written, produced and directed by Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton. This show marked the first new collaboration for the writers in eight years - they have previously jointly won the Royal Television Society's Lifetime Achievement Award and were the creators of hit Channel 4 series Drop The Dead Donkey, which ran for six series between 1990 and 1998.
